taking refuge in beauty
Dear writers,
As we segue into autumn and an increasingly tumultuous time in the world, I wanted to send you some short, beautiful reads that you can take refuge in when you need a rest from the chatter of the news cycle. Here are a few pieces that I've read and felt inspired by recently:
Fiction:
"Atoms," by Michelle Ross
Poetry:
"Gretel, from a Sudden Clearing," by Marie Howe
Non-fiction:
"The Heart-Work: Writing About Trauma as a Subversive Act" by Melissa Febos
I also wanted to tell you about a very special Fresh Ink workshop coming up in November. On November 7, writer Ashleigh Bell Pedersen will be leading a unique drop-in workshop called Writing With the Senses.
If you've read any of Ashleigh's fiction before, you know how masterfully she taps into the five senses to make you feel like you're living and breathing her stories. In this workshop, she'll show you how writers like Arundhati Roy, Téa Obreht, and Eowyn Ivey use sensory details and figurative language to create lush, textured imagery. She'll also offer rich writing prompts that help you practice using these techniques to invite readers more fully into your storyworld.
There are limited spots available in this workshop, so if you're interested, make sure to grab your ticket soon.
I hope to see you soon, writers, and in the meantime, keep carving out time to write and create--your voices matter!
Jaime
