spirit guides for your writing
I've been drawing a lot of these animal spirit cards lately, and so many of them speak to me in my role as a writer. Here are three I've drawn recently that have helped me work with some of the challenges in the writing process.
The Raccoon: This card represents the talented artist who is still in hiding. It’s about the creative ego fear that crops up when you anticipate how others--and you yourself--will judge your writing.
To bring this energy into balance, create new work. Allow yourself to write a rough draft of a scene, even if it’s clunky and awkward. Then, share one small piece of your work with another person—even if it’s only a sentence.
The Firefly: The firefly represents the powerful charge of inspiration. The only catch? Its brilliance tends to fade quickly if you don't harness its energy.
To bring this energy into balance: nurture your creative spark. Seek support and guidance from a mentor, a peer, or even a book (three that I often turn to for excellent lessons and prompts are: The Art of Fiction, What If?, and Everything I Know About Writing.
The Fish: The fish loves to be in movement, but it can often be distracted, moving in every direction but never reaching any goal. (This card hits home with me a lot these days!)
To bring this energy into balance: focus on one thing. Take a day-long break from social media and email; then set a small, manageable goal for your writing and complete it.
