the alignment project

15 CONVERSATIONS IN 60 DAYS

January 5 – March 5, 2023

Between January 5 and march 5, 2024, I’m leading The Alignment Project – an initiative to help writers explore the writing life they most desire and attain a stronger feeling of alignment with their authentic creative selves.

As a part of The Alignment Project, I am gifting 15 writers a 90-minute conversation to discuss their dream writing life, explore the roadblocks currently standing in their way, and construct a clear, inspiring, and practical plan to become more aligned with their creative selves.

the story behind the project

Back in 2009, I found myself in an unhappy headspace. It wasn't that my life was terrible – I had a steady job teaching English at a nice private school and I lived in an adorable bungalow in South Austin that was an incredible steal, rent-wise, even back then.

But I felt a haunting sense of disconnection from my writing self, the self that, in my MFA program, had felt very much alive and thriving and recognized by others.

After I started working as a middle-school teacher, I could never seem to find time to write, and when I did find the time, I felt lost on how to proceed. How could I progress from hardly knowing what to write about to writing a whole novel?

At times, it felt like the smart, sensible thing to do was to give up on my unrealistic-feeling dream of becoming a novelist and focus on the concrete realities of adult life.

The only problem was, when I thought about that "sensible" approach to life, I felt a yawning sense of emptiness.

I was in a dilemma, then. I felt clear on the fact that the life I was leading was misaligned with where I really wanted to go, but I wasn't sure how to get myself on the right path (or if that path even existed).

That year, I began the long journey of reconnecting with my creative self and carving out more time to devote energy to the writing I loved. And over the next few years, it began to hit home how important writing was to me – not because I was writing things that would change the world, but because writing was what made me feel alive, and unique, and full of humor and feeling and purpose.

my gift to writers

Now, during my coaching consultations, I often hear writers talk about a sense of misalignment that sounds very familiar to me. They know they want to write – very much so – but they're not sure how to make that happen, or even if it's possible.

That's why, this January, I'm beginning The Alignment Project,to share the strategies and mindsets I’ve learned that help writers move into a better sense of alignment with their creative selves.

For me, one of the biggest satisfactions of coaching is helping writers move from a place of disorientation and disillusionment to a place of enjoyment and purpose, to feeling like they're really themselves again.

So, during The Alignment Project, I'll be gifting 15 writers a 90-minute conversation to discuss the writing life they most desire, explore the roadblocks currently standing in their way, and construct a clear, inspiring, and practical plan to become more aligned with their creative selves.

These conversations will take place between January 5 and March 5, 2024.

what’s a coaching conversation?

The coaching conversations I offer are an opportunity for me to deepen relationships with the writers in my community, learn more about your writing needs, and pass on the gifts I’ve received from my own teachers and mentors.

While these conversations are one of the ways I connect with writers interested in upcoming sessions of my five-month coaching program, The Writer’s Transformation Project, they are not sales conversations.

They are designed to have value for you as a standalone experience.

what will you gain?

During our conversation, you will:

  • Reach a deeper understanding of your writing dreams and why they're so important to you.

  • Identify the challenges that have been holding you back from pursuing your writing dreams with confidence and consistency.

  • Construct a clear plan for how to get from where you are now to where you'd like to be.

  • Gain insight into whether The Writer’s Transformation Project is a good fit for you, now or in the future.

this project is for you if…

  • You have a nagging sense that you're neglecting an important part of your creative self.

  • You remember once having big creative ambitions but it’s hard to reconnect with those now in a way that feels realistic.

  • You know there are stories you want to tell that you haven’t yet expressed.

  • Your life feels somewhat misaligned with the creative goals that are closest to your heart.
